The conflict in the story Wednesday Wars is at first seen
as external: human versus human: Holling deals with being Presbyterian in a Jewish
school, he is forced to stay after school and learn Shakespeare with his teacher, Mrs.
Baker, his peers ridicule him for wearing the ridiculous costume with tights, and his
father is a strict, unforgiving man; however, in the end, many readers will believe that
the conflict is internal: human versus himself: Holling is really facing what all of us
must face, growing up. This is truly a story of coming of age, which is an internal
conflict, moved forward by external forces.
