The New Colossus is to be contrasted with the old
colossus. The ancient Colossus at Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world,
was designed to impress visitors as they approached the harbor. The second line
expresses the legend that the Rhodian Colossus stood as a kind of arch, under which
visiting ships sailed. It was therefore designed to fill visitors with awe. In contrast,
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, given in the spirit of hope and
expansiveness. An awe inspiring arch under which people can traverse is one of the most
popular forms of grand architecture. Almost every great culture has something
similar.
