What is the mood for the movie The Freedom Writers?I am having trouble with this because the movie reveals the dark situations of the teens, yet...

I would say that much of the film contains the tone of
empowerment.  This is driven home in many of the situations.  The fact that the students
learn to trust Erin and end up graduating and going on to college helps to bring this
idea of empowerment through.  At the same time, the building of a community, where
solidarity and acting in accordance to one another's learning helps to feed the tone of
empowerment.  The students no longer look to each other as adversaries, but rather as
colleagues and individuals who are bound to each other's success.  This enhances the
idea of empowerment.  On Erin's end, she refuses to acquiesce to defeat.  She
demonstrates empowerment in fighting her department head, the students' resistance, and
even her own husband.  She also displays a power of empowerment in fighting economic
conditions, working multiple jobs in order to get her students the materials they
need.
