One of the events that stands out in The Book
Thief is the moment when the prisoners are being marched through town by the
Nazi officers on the way to Dachau. All the prisoners are starving and frail, and one
man in particular continues to fall because he is weak and malnourished. Hans breaks
all social and governmental law to uphold moral law and offer this man a piece of
bread. The man is incredibly grateful for this act of kindness, but of course Hans is
seen and both he and the prisoner are whipped. I would like to think that I would have
had the courage to act as Hans did in this situation. Throughout the novel, Hans is
portrayed as an upstanding character who acts for the benefit of his family and others
before himself. His actions in this scene of the novel are
honorable.
