George Moore, in his href="http://fair-use.org/g-e-moore/principia-ethica/">Principa
Ethica makes the argument that for an action to be ethical (thus
moral) it must intentionally result in a good and ethical result, not only for the
actor, but for the universe as a whole.
He states
that:
"The value of a whole must not be assumed to be the
same as the sum of the values of its parts" href="http://fair-use.org/g-e-moore/principia-ethica/s.18">§18
So,
basically he is of the viewpoint that the ends justify the means, because if "the
addition of a bad thing to a good whole may increase the positive value of the whole"
then the "good" result must be taken into account by the person acting, also termed a
moral
actor
