Probably the most prestigious award for short story
fiction, the annual O. Henry Award does not offer a cash prize to the winner of the
competition. In the past, however, the O. Henry competition has given cash awards in a
separate contest for young adult writers. The winning story is chosen from a group of 20
short story finalists selected by the series editor. A jury then chooses the eventual
winner (and, in the past, 2nd and 3rd place winners) from the 20 finalists. Stories must
appear in a print publication in order to be considered (no online or unpublished
submissions are eligible). I have not been able to determine specifically what the
winner of the competition receives (plaque, medallion, certificate, etc.), but the
winning story is published--along with the finalists--in the annual O. Henry
Prize Stories Collection.
