One of the reasons why grey is so often used is the
overall conception of the life of people living under a system like that of Big Brother
and the Party. So much of Winston's life is grey, the walls, the floors, many of the
clothes, and often the things he eats as well. The absence of any vibrance contrasts
directly with that use of yellow to signify hope.
One of
the characteristics of this grey world is that one thing always is able to blend into
the next, there is no contrast, there is no real way of standing out or delineating
changes. It just goes on and on, like the war, like Winston's struggle to free himself
from the shackles of the party.
