When Madame Loisel goes to her friend, Madame Forestier,
to borrow jewelry to wear to the party, she is not satisfied with the selection
originally shown her. Loisel asks if Forestier has "anything else, by chance?" Loisel
is vain and greedy and feels that her beauty entitles her to as much as her friend has.
Forestier is generous and tells Loisel to "...look for yourself. I don't know which
ones you'll like."
When Loisel comes upon a box lined with
black satin, she is awed by the necklace it holds. When she is able to get out the
words to ask if she can borrow that superb necklace, Forestier does not hesitate. She
replies "Yes, of course." This could be considered an example of foreshadowing of the
real price of the necklace; had the necklace been as valuable as Loisel believed,
Forestier would definitely been more hesitant to entrust it to someone
else.
