"Pied Beauty," by Gerard Manley Hopkins, is formatted as a
prayer of thanksgiving to God for "dappled things." The speaker is praising the beauty
of all things that are spotted and in turn praising the creator who made them all. He
specifically mentions such things as a cows, trout, finches, fields, and generalizes to
all things that are "counter, original, spare, strange." The poem contains beautiful
imagery, skillfully placed alliteration, and an abundance of assonance and consonance,
but, I'm sorry to say, absolutely no personification.
