During respiration, complex carbohydrates are broken down
to release energy and water and carbon dioxide are the waste products of this reaction.
Respiration leads to an increase in carbon dioxide and a decrease in
oxygen.
In photosynthesis, plants use energy from the sun
to convert water and carbon dioxide into complex carbohydrates and oxygen. The result of
photosynthesis is an increase in oxygen and a decrease in carbon
dioxide.
From the values given above, during photosynthesis
there is an increase in the levels of oxygen and a decrease in the levels of carbon
dioxide, this shows that it occurred.
But as in the case of
respiration also, there is an increase in the level of oxygen and a decrease in the
level of carbon dioxide, it did not occur.
