I would say that one of the most dominant elements present
is the composition of literature.  I cannot recall a film where the act of student
writing played such an important role.  The idea of engaging the students in writing
occupies a central role in the evolution of characters in the film, but also in
highlighting the transformative power of writing.  The audience is made aware of
writing's power in seeing students compose and physically push pencil to paper.  The
notion of art as a reflection of social reality and how art can be used to envision a
world that is vastly different from one's own is placed in the forefront of the film's
concern.  It is through writing that the Erin is able to transform her students and
allow them to understand the power they have their own lives and the world around them.
 The composition of art, in particular writing, is what fosters this evolution in both
Erin and her students.
