Tessie claims that the lottery isn't fair, particularly
because Bill didn't have enough time to choose.
"I tell you it wasn't fair.
You didn't give him time enough to choose. Everybody saw
that."
The choice of slips
had to be very carefully done in order to not be selected, but come on. It's a lottery.
It's purely chance who among the four in their family was about to
"win".
This challenge of hers goes completely unnoticed and
is never addressed. Perhaps the reason is just because this is done completely by
chance.
Tessie is right according to the normal standards
of judgment that people possess. But this was no ordinary town. This reveals that
sometimes we do things out of such a routine that we fail to question that
routine.
