Mary Cassatt was an important American painter of
the late 1800s and early 1900s. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1844 and
grew up in Philadelphia. During her childhood she spent much time traveling in Europe
with her family. As a result, she developed a strong interest in arts, and in 1861, at
the age of seventeen, Mary Cassatt entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Concordantly, in 1869, she decided to study art in Europe, where she began to develop
her distinctive and individual style. Within this time Mary Cassatt met the artist
Degas. Degas admired her work and encouraged her career as a painter. Cassatt,
therefore, adopted the impressionist style of painting. In the years between 1875 and
1880, she had several shows in American galleries. Accordingly, her style continued to
develop, and she was much influenced by Japanese art. Her clear outlines of figures and
the strong patterns of color that she used show this influence
