I can see quite a few places in the passage where you can
substitute some of your vocabulary words for words or phrases that are in the
text.
A person who tells the story is a
narrator.
The main character is the
protagonist.
When the narrator can see into the minds of
others, that is omniscience.
An overall feeling is a
mood.
Indirect references to historical events like the
Cold War (or to things like works of literature) are
allusions.
If an author hints at some event that is looming
in the future, the author is using foreshadowing.
Instead
of the word "tension" you could use "suspense." You might also use "suspense" up a bit
where it talks about stress and uncertainty.
The most
exciting point of the story is the climax.
Something
contrary to what you expect can be irony.
