I think a lot of students get confused about the words
"coming of age." This simply means "growing up." So, your assignment is to show how
one of the characters "grows up."
In a five paragraph
essay, I would use one body paragraph to show the character as innocent, young, and
not grown up - descriptions from the beginning of the story, most
likely.
Then, in each of the next two body paragraphs, I
would focus on two specific ways the character changed. This could mean a couple of
things. This could show an event that significantly changed the charcter - and how - or
it could simply show two major changes (as compared to the first paragraph) - and give
evidence of those changes.
A very small scale example of
this with Scout is as follows: at the beginning of the book her innocence/childishness
is evidenced by her fascination with Boo Radley - and the games and ideas that come from
imagining he is a monster. Then (2nd paragraph) she begins to learn to see things from
other people's perspectives (lesson from Atticus). This includes Walter Cunninham,
Calpurnia, Tom Robinson. By the end of the novel (3rd paragraph) we see Scout walking
Boo Radley home, and looking at the neighborhood from his porch. Only 2 years have gone
by since the beginning of the book, but Scout is a great deal more mature - evidenced by
her description at the end of the novel.
Hope that
helps.
