This is an easy choice, as there are only two characters
to choose from: the father and the son. But, when you choose one, you must include the
other, since the entire novel is an traveling dialogue between the two. Neither of the
characters has any private thoughts revealed since the narration is 3rd
person.
Here's the basic style of the each character and
McCarthy's style:
Son: asks
many questions. ("Are we the good guys. Are we carrying the
fire.")
Father: answers the
questions affirmatively and compassionately ("Yes we are the the good guys. Yes we are
carrying the fire.")
Style:
notice that McCarthy does not use question marks or many commas. He keeps his questions
and answers simple and metaphorical. He uses much dark imagery in the description of
the landscape but refuses to let it creep into the conversations between the father and
sun. So, the father's answers are a means of keeping the son safe, alive, hopeful, and
motivated.
