What are the themes for Chapter 24 in To Kill a Mockingbird? What is the daily life issue that we can connect to the theme of chapter 24 of To Kill...

Chapter 24 is the chapter where Scout attends one of Aunt
Alexandra's missionary teas.  There are a few theme subjects addressed in this chapter,
including Scout learning lessons in growing up as a lady,
Miss Maudie having the courage to stand up for what she believes
in
, and of course, the following:

The main
theme that is reinforced here is the idea of hypocrisy as
presented by the people of Maycomb.  Here is a group of white women, all church going
Christians, meeting with the purpose of discussing (and ultimately supporting) Christian
mission work overseas.

While they are able to talk about
"living a Christian life" and taking care of those people in the "jungle over there" and
supporting mission work and spreading the love of Jesus Christ - in the same breath they
can belittle the African Americans living in their own
town.

And through this two-faced-ness, they even have the
audacity to identify hypocrisy in others.

Is Hawaii a colony of the U.S.?

No, Hawaii is not a colony of the United States.  In fact,
those of us who are from Hawaii tend to get pretty annoyed when people talk about
leaving Hawaii to go to the United States.  We call the rest of the US "the
Mainland..."

Anyway, Hawaii is actually one of the states
of the United States.  It has been a state now since it became the 50th (and last) state
of the Union in 1959.

Before that, Hawaii was a territory
(so I guess you could call it a colony) of the US.  The US got it in the 1890s by
overthrowing the last queen of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani.

What is lockjaw?

Lockjaw is one of the names for tetanus which is a serious
disease that affects muscles. Among other effects, it causes severe muscle contractions
in the jaw, making it difficult for the victims to open their mouth. This effect has
given the disease its name.

Tetanus is caused by effect of
poisons produced by a germs called clostridium tetani, that thrive in dust and dirt. A
person gets infected by these germs through open wounds. In particular, the chances of
getting infected with tetanus is higher when the wound is caused by any dirty object
such as a nail of a dirty hand tool. The effect of infection may become visible only
after a few days or weeks of getting the infection. A person so affected feels
depressed, has headaches, fever, pain, and soon has trouble opening the mouth or
swallowing. After some time all the body muscles tighten causing spasm. This may
interfere with breathing, and if timely treatment is not given the affected person may
die of asphyxiation.

To prevent tetanus all wounds should
be cleaned thoroughly. Also it is advisable to give anti tetanus injection to persons
with any significant injuries or wounds.

Find slope of the tangent to f(x) at P and then find equation of the tangent line at P. Is the derivative of the equation of the tangent line at...

f(x) = 6x-x^2.

P(1,5) is
point on the curve as f(1) = 6*1*1^2 = 5 verifies.

The
slope of the curve at (1,5) is:

dy/dx = (6x-x^2)' =
6-2x.

So (dy/dx at x= 1 ) is 6-2*1 =
4.

So the equation of tangent at (x1,y1) is y-t1 =
(dy/dx)(x-x1)

But (x1,y1) = (1,5) and (dy/dx at x = 1) =
4.

So the equation of tangent at (1,5)
is:

y-5 = 4(x-1) .

4x-y -4+5 =
0

4x-y+1 = 0.

The slope secant
value  PQ :

slope = (Py- Qy)/(Px-
Qx).

Qx = 3, 2, 1.5,   1.01,
1.001

Qy =9,  8,  6.75,  5.0399,
5.00399.

The value of the slope
:

Slope :
(Py-Qy)/(Px-Qx)

(5-9)/(1-3) =
2

(5-8)/(1-2)
=3

(5-6.75)/(1-1.5) =
3.5

(5-5.0399)/(1-1.01) =
3.99

(5-5.003999)/(1-1.001) =
3,999

The process shows that limit of the secant PQ as Q
tends P is dy/dx = 4.

What are the ingredients for acorn pancakes, and what do you do to make them? What are the steps to make acorn pancakes? Please help.

My Side of the Mountain author Jean
Craighead George also published a cookbook of her mountain favorites--Acorn
Pancakes, Dandelion Salad and 33 Other Recipes.
This recipe for acorn
pancakes comes from this
book.

Ingredients:  (1)
one-half cup of white flour; (2) one cup of acorn flour; (3) two and one-half teaspoons
of baking powder; (4) one-quarter teaspoon of salt; (5) one egg--beaten; (6) 10 ounces
of milk; (7) three tablespoons of butter. You will also need butter, margarine or oil
for your skillet or frying
pan.

Directions: You will need
two separate bowls and a frying pan. Mix the white flour, acorn flour, baking powder and
salt in one bowl. In the second bowl, combine the butter, egg and milk. Combine all of
the mixtures together and stir lightly. Spoon the mixture onto the hot skillet. Flip
once after bubbles appear on the surface.

The author
suggests serving the finished product with "maple syrup or wild
jellies."

Please describe the character of Jimmie.

The oldest child of Ayah and Chato was Jimmie. Jimmie had
gotten some education, and he helped his father when he was a boy, working to keep the
fences of the rancher mended. When he grew up he joined the service, or was drafted, and
went to Vietnam, where he was assigned to helicopter duty. The helicopter crashed and
Jimmie was killed. Ayah and Chato had also had additional children, but none who grew to
adulthood with them. Some of the unnamed babies died shortly after childbirth, and one
died before his first birthday. Two children who survived the early years were Ella and
Danny. These children had apparently contracted tuberculosis, and doctors came with a
policeman from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to claim the children and to
institutionalize them in Colorado.

Are there any themes that are the same in Hughes' work compared to "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker?

I think the best way to answer this question is to
consider the historical context and identity of each author.  Langston Hughes was one of
the first poets of the Harlem Renaissance, the artistic movement
that started when African Americans in Harlem, NY began devoting themselves to art,
music, poetry, prose and dance that celebrated who they were and where they had come
from.  This was the only the beginning of what would eventually become a very strong
literary genre in the United States.  When you look at Hughes' poetry, (ie: "Theme for
English B" and "The Negro Speaks of Rivers") it is full of the celebration of his
heritage, the Black man speaking up for himself, and the idea that though black people
and white people possess inherent differences, they are all still
human and therefore, at the core, not especially different from one
another.

Alice Walker is a modern day,
female author who has in everything she's written, continued the
same sentiments that began with the Harlem Renaissance.  "Everyday Use" focuses on the
latter part of the Civil Rights Movement and the black woman.  Society is changing, but
Civil Rights and Harlem Renaissance themes remain largely the same.  There is a focus on
and celebration of heritage, a desire to for authenticity and equality, and the sense of
power that comes from having an outlet to reveal these feelings.

Comment on the setting and character of "The Fall of the House of Usher."How does setting act as a character?

Excellent observation, as it identifies how the settings of Poe's stories reflect the characters of their protagonists. Whet...
