The oldest child of Ayah and Chato was Jimmie. Jimmie had
gotten some education, and he helped his father when he was a boy, working to keep the
fences of the rancher mended. When he grew up he joined the service, or was drafted, and
went to Vietnam, where he was assigned to helicopter duty. The helicopter crashed and
Jimmie was killed. Ayah and Chato had also had additional children, but none who grew to
adulthood with them. Some of the unnamed babies died shortly after childbirth, and one
died before his first birthday. Two children who survived the early years were Ella and
Danny. These children had apparently contracted tuberculosis, and doctors came with a
policeman from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to claim the children and to
institutionalize them in Colorado.
