Health of humans is very much affected by deficiency of
magnesium in their diet an bodies. Magnesium is an important mineral nutrient required
by humans. Along with calcium and phosphorous, it is an important constituent part of
bones and teeth. People obtain their requirements of magnesium from food like whole
grain cereals, nuts, legume, and green leafy
vegetables.
Deficiency of magnesium leads to health
problems like hyper-excitability, muscle weakness and fatigue. Severe and extended
magnesium deficiency can also lead to more serious consequences like death fro heart
failure.
Magnesium deficiency results from causes like
alcohol abuse, diabetes, excessive or chronic vomiting or diarrhea. Some drugs such as
osmotic diuretics, cisplatin, ciclosporin and amphetamines, can also deplete magnesium
levels.
Magnesium deficieny can be cured generally by
dietary supplements. However in severe cases intravenous injection of magnesium may be
necessary.
