We have a nose to warm, clean, and humidify the air we
breath, and for perception of smell and taste (when you have a cold you can't really
taste your food because smell is an important factor in taste).
The
purpose of the external nose is two-fold: allow particles to enter the nose for the
perception of smell and taste, and for allowing air to enter when we
breathe.
The functions of the internal nose are to transfer chemcical
information from the hair folicles stimulated by the particles for the perception of
smell and taste, to produce mucus to help clean the respitory tract clean and moist, and
to direct the flow of air through the nasal passage, into the nasalpharnx to the
hypopharanyx, and finally to the lungs.
