I cannot think of a more subjective and personal
assignment. To summarize any writing into three words is one of the most difficult task
because there is really no right answer present. The “right/ wrong” idea is replaced by
“accurate/ inaccurate.” This one is going to be dependent on what you feel and what you
experienced upon reading Vonnegut’s work. No one else can nor should answer it for
you. Some initial questions can be posed to help you in this process. The first would
be that after reading the story, what were your initial reactions to it? When you
finished reading it, what were your feelings? In articulating them, why did you feel
the way you did? What elements in the text allowed you to feel the way you did? When
you answer this question, you will be able to go back to the text and identify critical
elements that helped formulate your reactions. With this, you might be able to point
out the three critical words from the text that connected to your reactions to the
story, allowing you a greater field from where you can select relevant words that have
meaning in determining importance.
